Diameter and Radius (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service) are two protocols used for AAA (Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting) services. The basic operation of RADIUS and Diameter is similar to each other in that they both carry authentication, authorization, and configuration information between the Network Access Server (NAS) and the Shared Authentication Server. Diameter is similar to many of the features of RADIUS in that it evolved from RADIUS. As a result, in diameter, the packet format has been significantly improved, the transport mechanism has been improved, and the overall concept from the client server to the peer-to-peer architecture has been improved.

Diameter is a protocol that provides the basic framework for any service that requires access, authorization, and accounting (AAA) or policy support across many IP-based networks. Originally derived from the RADIUS protocol, it is also a protocol that provides AAA services to computers to connect and use networks. The diameter is greatly improved on the radius in different ways. It includes many enhancements, such as error handling and messaging reliability. Therefore, it aims to become the next generation authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA) protocol.

RADIUS is a protocol used to transfer authentication, authorization, and configuration information between a Network Access Server (NAS) and a shared authentication server. The NAS functions as a RADIUS client and is responsible for passing user information to a specified RADIUS server. The RADIUS server, on the other hand, receives user connection requests, performs user authentication, and returns all configuration information that the client needs to provide services to the user.
