3. Device Roles on an SNMP-Managed Network

·        NMS

An NMS is a server that has network management software installed. It sends various query packets to managed devices and receives traps from the managed devices.

·        Managed devices

Managed devices include routers, switches, firewalls, and other devices that support SNMP management.

·        Agent

It is a process on a managed device. The agent provides the following functions:

(1) Receives and parses query packets sent from the NMS.
(2) Reads or writes management variables based on the packet type, and sends response packets to the NMS.
(3) Sends traps to the NMS when specific events occur. For example, an interface goes Up or Down, the STP topology is changed, or an OSPF neighbor relationship goes Down. Protocol modules on the device define the conditions that lead to the traps.

4. SNMP Structure

The preceding figure shows the simplest diagram of an SNMP-managed network. You only need to ensure that the NMS and managed devices are reachable to each other. A typical network management process is as follows: The NMS sends packets to query running information (for example, CPU usage) of a managed device. The managed device responds to the query. In this case, the NMS accesses UDP port 161 of the managed device.

Another typical network management process is as follows: A managed device generates a trap after an event occurs, and sends the trap to UDP port 162 of the NMS. In this way, network administrators can learn a variety of emergencies occurring on the network from the NMS in a timely manner.
