(NLB) servers are directly connected to a Huawei S series switch that serves as the gateway. Several NLB-enabled servers establish a cluster. The NLB cluster uses a virtual IP address and a MAC address. The NLB cluster directly communicates with a Huawei S series switch that serves as the gateway through the virtual IP address and MAC address. The switch simultaneously sends one copy of network-side packets to all the servers in the NLB cluster.
Then the servers implement load balancing using specific algorithms and determine which server
to respond to the network-side packets.
Servers in the NLB cluster use the same IP address (NLB cluster IP address) and MAC address (NLB cluster MAC address). A switch used as the gateway that connects to the NLB cluster must send packets to all the servers in the NLB cluster using the cluster IP address. NLB servers can work in unicast (a unicast cluster MAC address starts with 02bf), multicast (a multicast cluster MAC address starts with 03bf), or IGMP multicast mode (an IGMP multicast cluster MAC address starts with 0100-5e).
