Criteria for determining the best cloud migration approach

This workload placement procedure should be used by organizations evaluating a workload migration to the cloud to develop an uniform cloud migration plan.

More than a third of companies have yet to take use of public cloud infrastructure and platform services. Even companies that embrace the public cloud nevertheless run a large amount of their IT operations on premises. IaaS and PaaS account for only roughly 30% of their total enterprise workload.

IT must adopt a systematic approach to deciding how to provision each new workload, each system it is updating, and its legacy portfolio when looking at its overall enterprise workload. To minimize risk and enhance success in a cloud migration strategy, IT should analyze each workload against the same balanced scorecard. Just over half of businesses claim they now have such a procedure in place.

Although each company's problems may differ, the following are the main dimensions to consider when considering a cloud migration strategy:

  • Risk

Starting with security and data privacy, the firm must assess numerous areas of risk. However, this should also include operational risks, such as a reduced ability to respond to performance issues, as well as liability risks, as most cloud clients carry the entire risk of a damaged workload.

IT must examine whether a workload can be moved to the cloud and, if so, whether the cloud poses a lower risk than internal resources in each situation.

  • Performance

Is the workload capable of delivering the performance that users expect based on their location and the method by which they will access the application? The performance of the network, computing, and storage systems must all be examined.

  • Cost

How much will the cloud-based service cost? In addition to layered services, such as backup, or fault-tolerant deployment across several data centers or regions, IT must once again consider computing, storage, and network resource usage.

Running a job on the cloud isn't always the most cost-effective option. If it isn't, IT must decide how much of a premium the company is willing to pay to move the burden away from its on-premises data center.

  • Workload requirements and architecture

Is the workload cloud-compatible? In other words, can the workload benefit from cloud-native solutions that scale dynamically and horizontally in response to demand? Is the workload in a position to manage the amount of data it needs to transmit out of the cloud?

If the answer to either of these questions is no, running the workload in the cloud could be much more expensive, especially if demand is highly unpredictable and the system must always run at the resource level required to deal with peak demand. Some workloads can be refactored or rewritten to make them cloud-ready, whereas others cannot or will not be modified.

These three migration methods can be used by businesses to migrate workloads.

IT will be able to focus on the specifics of each project instead of generic principles, such as low-risk jobs first, by evaluating workloads according to a consistent process. If the benefits of shifting to the cloud outweigh the hazards, even a high-risk migration may be justified. Similarly, if the workload isn't well-suited to the cloud, a low-risk migration may not make sense.
