A solid-state disk (SSD), sometimes called an electronic disk or solid-state disk, consists of a control unit and a solid-state storage unit. SSDs are the same as hard disk drives (HDDs) in the interface specifications, definitions, functionalities, usage, appearance, and size. What distinguishes SSDs from HDDs is that the SSDs do not use any mechanical components but use the NAND-based flash memory to write or erase blocks for data reads/writes. Without the magnetic media or spindle motor as HDDs, SSDs show outstanding performance in I/O processing, power consumption, shockproof, and reliability.
