Why does the available space on a storage medium not change after a file is deleted

3

If you specify the /unreserved parameter when running the delete [ /unreserved ] [ /force ] { filename | devicename } command to delete a specified file on a storage medium, the file is deleted permanently and cannot be restored.

If you do not specify the /unreserved parameter when running the delete [ /unreserved ] [ /force ] { filename | devicename } command to delete a specified file on a storage medium, the file is moved to the recycle bin and is not deleted permanently. The file still occupies storage space on the storage medium.

You can run the dir /all command to view information about all files, including deleted files marked with square brackets ([ ]). To restore deleted files, run the undelete { filename | devicename } command.

To remove a file from the recycle bin to release the occupied storage space, run the reset recycle-bin [ filename | devicename ] command.

How to clear the recycle bin of an S series switch
For S series switches (except S1700 switches), run the following command to clear the recycle bin:
<HUAWEI> reset recycle-bin
Note: The delete XXX command in the user view only moves files to the recycle bin, but does not release the storage space. You can run the dir/all command to view information about all files, including deleted files in the recycle bin marked in brackets ([ ]). These files can be restored using the undelete command. To permanently delete these files from the recycle bin, run the reset recycle-bin command. The files that are deleted using the delete command without the /unreserved parameter are saved in the recycle bin.

Why does the size of a file change after the file is uploaded through FTP
There are two FTP transmission modes: binary transmission and text transmission. If the text transmission mode is used, certain content is automatically converted after FTP transmission. Therefore, it is advised to use the binary transmission mode to transfer a binary file, such as the system software file.

Permanently deleting files or releasing storage space (of the flash or SD card) on the firewall
The method of permanently deleting files from the firewall to release the storage space is as follows: 1. Run the reset recycle-bin[ filename ] command to permanently delete a file in the Recycle Bin. If you do not specify the file name, all files in the Recycle Bin are deleted. 2. Run the delete/unreserved + file name command to directly and permanently delete a file.

Why does the size of a file change after the file is uploaded to a device through FTP
The FTP protocol supports two file transfer modes: ASCII and binary. The ASCII mode is used to transfer text files, and the binary mode is used to transfer compressed files, databases, system software, and other program files. When the ASCII mode is used, some content is automatically converted during file transfer. Therefore, the file size changes after it is uploaded to the device.

What can I do if the available storage space is insufficient when I want to upgrade an S series switch
If the available storage space is insufficient when you want to upgrade an S series switch (except the S1700), perform the following operations: Run the dir command to check the remaining storage space. If the remaining storage space is insufficient for saving new system software, run the delete /unreserved XXX command in the user view to delete unnecessary files. All files displayed in the output of the dir command can be deleted as long as the deletion does not affect running of the switch. You can delete the system software package of the earlier version because system software packages generally occupy relatively large spaces. Do not restart the switch after deleting the package because it cannot start without a system software package. Restart the switch after the new system software package is uploaded and specified as the package for the next startup.
