The S12700 uses a hardware architecture that separates the switching plane from the control plane. It has independent SFUs, and the CSS card is installed on the SFU. Packet forwarding is not affected when the S12700 has no MPU installed. This architecture allows two S12700s to set up a CSS with no MPU installed on the standby switch. 1+N backup of MPUs enables a CSS to run stably as long as one MPU of any chassis in the CSS is working normally.
