Hello, everyone. In this article, I will introduce how to configure Smart Link.

Experiment topology

Figure 1: Network Topology

The users (not shown in the figure) connected to SW3 have user VLAN 10 and VLAN 20. VLAN 99 is the control VLAN of Smart Link. Create a Smart Link group on SW3, and configure GE0/0/21 as the master port and GE0/0/22 as the slave port. When the network is normal, traffic is transmitted through GE0/0/21. When GE0/0/21 goes down, traffic is automatically switched to GE0/0/22. When the fault is rectified, GE0/0/21 enters the forwarding state and traffic is still forwarded through GE0/0/21.

Configuration

The configuration of SW3 is as follows:

[SW3] vlan batch 10 20 99

# Set the interface type to trunk and allow packets from related VLANs (user VLAN and control VLAN) to pass through.

[SW3-gigabitethernet0/0/21] port link-type trunk

[SW3-gigabitethernet0/0/21] port trunk allow-pass vlan 10 20 99

[SW3] Interface gigabitethernet0/0/22

[SW3-gigabitethernet0/0/22] port link-type trunk

[SW3-gigabitethernet0/0/22] port trunk allow-pass vlan 10 20 99

# Disable STP on the interface. STP must be disabled on the interfaces added to the Smart Link group.

[SW3] Interface gigabitethernet0/0/21

[SW3-gigabitethernet0/0/21] stp disable

[SW3] Interface gigabitethernet0/0/22

[SW3-gigabitethernet0/0/22] stp disable

[SW3] smart-link group 1

[SW3-smlk-group1] port gigabitethernet0/0/21 master    # Add GE0/0/21 to the Smart Link group and configure it as the master interface.

[SW3-smlk-group1] port gigabitethernet0/0/22 slave    # Add GE0/0/22 to the Smart Link group and configure it as a slave interface.

[SW3-smlk-group1] flush send control-vlan 99 password simple 123    # Configure the control VLAN and set the password.

[SW3-smlk-group1] restore enable    # Enable the revertive switching function. By default, the function is disabled

[SW3-smlk-group1] timer wtr 30    # Set the WTR time. The default WTR time is 60s

[SW3-smlk-group1] smart-link enable      # Enable Smart Link group

NoteBefore adding an interface to a Smart Link group, run the stp disable command to disable the spanning tree function on the interface. You can also run the stp disable command in the system view to disable STP globally.

The configuration of SW1 is as follows:

[SW1] vlan batch 10 20 99

The configuration of SW2 is as follows:

[SW2-gigabitethernet0/0/22] port link-type trunk

[SW2-gigabitethernet0/0/22] port trunk allow-pass vlan 10 20 99

[SW2] Interface gigabitethernet0/0/24

[SW2-gigabitethernet0/0/24] port link-type trunk

[SW2-gigabitethernet0/0/24] port trunk allow-pass vlan 10 20 99

# Disable STP on the interface.

[SW2] Interface gigabitethernet0/0/22

[SW2-gigabitethernet0/0/22] stp disable

Verification

After the preceding configurations are complete, perform the following operations to verify the configurations:

[SW3] display smart-link group 1

Smart Link group 1 information :

  Smart Link group was enabled

  Wtr-time is: 30 sec.

  There is no Load-Balance

  There is no protected-vlan reference-instance

  DeviceID: 4c1f-cc2c-1dd9  Control-vlan ID: 99

The preceding command output shows that GE0/0/21 is in active state and GE0/0/22 is in inactive state. Next, let's see what happens when GE0/0/21 of SW3 is faulty. Manually shut down GE0/0/21 of SW3.

The command output shows that the status of GE0/0/21 changes to inactive and that of GE0/0/22 changes to active. In addition, the value of Flush Count of GE0/0/22 changes to 1, indicating that a Flush message has been sent to GE0/0/22 after the topology changes.
