Today, I would like to share with you a comparison of OSN and PTN technologies.

     

1. SDH technology

SDH is a synchronous digital technology based on time division multiplexing. For various upper-layer networks, SDH is equivalent to a transparent physical channel. On this transparent channel, as long as the bandwidth allows, users can carry out various services, such as telephone, digital video, etc., and the quality of the service will be guaranteed.

SDH is based on time division multiplexing, has high stability, and provides rich detection and error correction capabilities. SDH can form various forms of ring network, with perfect self-healing protection function, which makes the availability of the transmission link very high. SDH can provide a circuit rate of 2Mbps to 10Gbps. It can be used as a link to support the IP network, and its role is only to connect the routers in a point-to-point manner. The SDH network can provide high-quality, high-reliability transmission channels. Through the structure of the self-healing ring, it can ensure that the switching time of the channel is less than 50ms.

Compared with the PTN technology, the disadvantage of this technology is that the overhead bytes lead to a decrease in channel utilization, and the actual transmission data payload is a little less.


2. PTN technology

PTN supports a variety of two-way point-to-point connection channels based on packet switching services, has the ability to adapt to various coarse and fine-grained services, end-to-end networking capabilities, and provides a "flexible" transmission pipeline that is more suitable for the characteristics of IP services; protection switching of point-to-point connection channels It can be completed within 50 milliseconds, and can achieve transmission-level service protection and recovery; inherits the operation, management and maintenance mechanism of SDH technology, and has a complete OAM of point-to-point connection to ensure that the network has protection switching, error detection and channel monitoring capabilities; complete It has multiple ways of interconnection and intercommunication with IP/MPLS, seamlessly carrying core IP services; the network management system can control the establishment and setting of connection channels, realize the distinction and guarantee of service QoS, and provide advantages such as SLA flexibly.

In addition, it can utilize various underlying transmission channels (such as SDH/Ethernet/OTN). In short, it has a complete OAM mechanism, accurate fault location and strict business isolation functions, maximizes the management and utilization of fiber resources, and ensures business security. After combining with GMPLS, it can realize the automatic configuration of resources and the mesh network. The high survivability.

PTN can better adapt to the current rapidly developing 3G service requirements. PTN is compatible with all services of SDH, but the focus is on better data services.

The PTN network provides a unified transmission platform compatible with various technologies such as Ethernet, ATM, SDH, PDH, PPP/HDLC, and frame relay, which eliminates the diversity of network construction types and replaces it with the diversity of interface types. Some network devices, such as ATM switches, Ethernet switches, and PDH optical transceivers, can be interconnected through a PTN network, or can be directly replaced by PTN's ATM interface, Ethernet interface, and PDH interface.

PTN is based on the needs of data services, and Ethernet technology is developed. Data services can be seamlessly connected. It has an efficient bandwidth management mechanism and traffic engineering. The PTN channel is flexible and can make better use of bandwidth;

SDH is a time division multiplexing technology, which is developed from the needs of voice services and PDH technology.

The SDH channel is rigid and needs to be occupied all the time.

PTN is an IP-oriented link, which realizes the mixed transmission of IP and TDM through PWE technology, while providing carrier-class reliability.
