1. Centralized inverter
The centralized inverter technology is that if thousands of parallel PV strings are connected to the DC input end of the same centralized inverter, the three-phase IGBT power module is used for the PV strings with high power, the field-effect transistor is used for the PV strings with low power, and the DSP conversion controller is used to improve the quality of the power generated, it is very close to the sine wave current and is generally used in large photovoltaic power stations (>10 kW). The biggest feature of the system is high power and low cost. However, because the output voltage and current of different PV strings are not completely matched (especially when the PV strings are partially shaded due to cloudiness, shade, and stains), the centralized inverter mode reduces the inverter efficiency and power consumption. At the same time, the power generation reliability of the entire photovoltaic system is affected by a poor working status of a photovoltaic cell group. The latest research directions are the use of space vector modulation control and the development of new inverter topology connections to achieve high efficiency under partial load.
2. String inverter
The PV string inverter is based on the modular concept. Each PV string (1–5 kW) has the maximum power peak tracking at the DC end and parallel connection to the grid at the AC end. It has become the most popular inverter in the international market. String inverters are used in many large PV plants. The advantages are that the PV modules are not affected by the differences between PV strings and the shading. In addition, the optimal operating point of PV modules does not match the inverter, which increases the energy yield. These technical advantages not only reduce the cost of the system, but also increase the reliability of the system. In addition, the concept of "master-slave" between PV strings enables the system to connect several PV strings and enable one or more PV strings to work to generate more power when a single PV string can enable a single inverter to work. The latest concept is that several inverters form a team to replace the master-slave concept, which further improves the system reliability. At present, transformerless string inverters have taken the dominant position.
3. Mini inverter
In a traditional PV system, the DC input end of each string inverter is connected to about 10 PV modules in series. If one of the 10 PV modules connected in series cannot work properly, the PV string is affected. If multiple inputs of the inverter use the same MPPT, all inputs are affected, greatly reducing the energy yield efficiency. In practical applications, clouds, trees, chimneys, animals, dust, ice and snow, and other factors can cause the above factors, the situation is very common. In the PV system of the mini inverter, each PV module is connected to a mini inverter. If one PV module does not work properly, only one PV module is connected.
