Hello team,

We are preparing to replace the Cisco C2911 with the Huawei S6720 switch. Can you tell me what is the difference between the set ip default next-hop and set ip next-hop commands on the Cisco switch? And what are the corresponding commands on the Huawei switch? Thank you!

Hello Hobbit,

The set IP default next-hop command verifies the existence of the destination IP address in the routing table, and…

  • If a route to the destination address exists, no policy will be applied to the traffic, and the traffic will be forwarded based on the routing table.

  • If there is no route to the destination IP address, a policy will be applied to forward the traffic to the next hop specified in the policy.

If the destination IP address is not the default route, you can run the redirect ip-nexthop X.X.X.X low-precedence command on the Huawei switch to do the replacement.

However, when the destination IP address matches the default route, Huawei switches forward packets along the original path even if the low-precedence parameter is configured. This implementation is different on Cisco switches and Huawei switches.

The set IP next-hop command verifies the existence of the next-hop specified, and…

  • If the next-hop exists in the routing table, the traffic will be forwarded to the next hop.

  • If the next-hop does not exist in the routing table, the router will use the normal routing table to forward data traffic.

This implementation mode can be replaced by the redirect ip-nexthop command on the Huawei switch.

Any further questions, let us know!
