Hello, everyone.

In this post, I would like to share with you cautions while replacing optical modules for devices

Nowadays the equpment vendors chose to use replacable optical modules for equipment, like SFP/SFP+/XFP. Theses modules are easy to replace, so if one of them is malfunctioning, you can easliy get it replaced without replacing the whole board. It's a good choice from maintenance and economic side.

While working with replacable optical modules, you must understand that, replacing the module must remove the fibers away first, so the sevice will be totally interrupted if there is no protection configured on this interface. So if it's possible, it good to consider configure a proction for the service on this interface, like PPS, SNCP, or client 1+1 protection for different sencenarios.

The basic steps of replacing a modules include:

1. Wear a ESD glove before opeartions.

2. Remove the patch fiber from the existing optical module, by press the fiber connector clip and pull out the fiber connector. Here is a thing to notice, that, you need to mark the direction of the fibers before you remove it, otherwise if you confused with the TX and RX direction of the fiber, even if the optical module is working normal, you can't get it work properly.

3. Remove the existing optical module, by pulling the latch of the module, and pull out the module from the socket.

4. The optical modules are nomally packet in a ESD bag, take a substutional module out and install it in the right direction. If you can't plug the module into the socket, it's possible you installed it in wrong direction, please be gental as it's a delicate device.

5. Reconnect the fibers.

Another thing to be noticed is that the optical module emits laser beam, this laser beam for telecommnunication is not visible, which is harzard to eyes,  so never look into the a optical fiber connector or a working optical module directly, it might cause harm to your eyes, even permanent blindness.

Thank you!

If you are laying fiber, what are the precautions?

That is a typo.. SFP+ is a enhanced version of SFP, it has the same physical dimensions but supports higher data rates. Normally SFP modules are bellow 4.25Gbps and SFP+ can supports up to 16Gbps base on model specifications. This post was last edited by user_2915719 at 2018-12-19 09:31.

The basic precautions is that you shouldn't put too much strength on the fiber, and don't the fixing the fiber with too small radius, generally it's recommend to have the radius larger than 40mm for 2mm fibers.
