Can SmartTier improve OLAP performance ?

Hi, dear

For OLTP applications, data files require performance acceleration areas because these files feature frequent, small, random read and write I/Os. Online logs involve frequent I/O operations but almost without hotspots, while control files and archived logs have less frequent I/O operations. Therefore, in OLTP applications, it is recommended that SmartTier be used to store Oracle data files on different tiers for performance acceleration.

For OLAP applications, data files feature large and multi-channel sequential I/Os. Since database query and analysis are concurrently implemented in multiple flows and rarely involve hotspot data, it is recommended that SmartTier not be used to accelerate the OLAP application performance.

Hello save_the_word!

Have a nice day!

It's can't. I/O model of the data warehouse service: A large number of sequential I/Os are read, and no obvious hotspot data is available.

in my opinion, yes it can if you assign performance tier to your olap system, but you are going to need a lot of resources for that. It will obviously perform better if its running on performance tier rather than capacity tier.

It's too expensive use full SSDs for OLAP . SmartTier is used to migrate hotspot data. However, OLAP is different from OLTP, and OLAP does not have obvious hotspot data. SmartTier does not initiate data migration. SmartTier has an effect on OLTP, but it does not have much effect on OLAP scenarios.

performance tier will imporve the performance , but the OLAP does't have hotspot data. there is no data will be migrated to performance tier .

yes, it'll have very less effect compared to the effect that it'll have on OLTP systems obviously.
SmartTier automatically analyzes data access frequencies per unit time and migrates data to disks of different performance levels based on the analysis result. (High-performance disks store most frequently accessed data, performance disks store less frequently accessed data, and large-capacity disks store seldom accessed data.) In this way, the optimal overall performance is achieved, and the IOPS cost is reduced.
In OLTP scenario SmartTIer performs better.
