Run tar to perform simple backup functions. To simplify the backup data management, you are advised to use backup software to back up data. The following is the procedure for using an AIX-based host to back up data to a virtual tape library:

1. Run tar to tar the directory to a .tar backup file.

tar -cvf etc.tar /etc

NOTE:
-cvf indicates that you want to create a backup file. etc.tar indicates the backup file and it is stored in the current directory by default. You can select your desired directory, for example /home/etc.tar.

2. Load the .tar backup file to the drive of the virtual tape library.

tar -rvf /dev/st0 etc.tar

NOTE:
-rvf indicates that you want to add files to the backup file and these files do not overwrite the written backup file. /dev/st0 indicates the drive of the virtual tape library and etc.tar indicates the backup file in the current directory. You can select your desired directory, for example /home/etc.tar.
