This is one of my articles from a recent activity, read and let me know about your opinion on this.
So our discussion evolves around Cloud Desktop here. To get a better understading we need to see the bigger picture here.
Will it replace the traditional PC or not? ABSOLUTELY YES.
But will it replace the Traditional PC completely? I think this is what we need to talk about.
Because in the end, even if you want to access your Cloud Desktop, you need some kind of equipment to access it. Whether it is a laptop or tablet or in a more advanced and futuristic world it might be a smart watch.
I think the question should be, When it'll replace the traditional PCs completely?
We have to understand this whole phenomenon of Cloud Desktop first. A very simple explanation is below.
"A Cloud Desktop is a virtual desktop, or you may also call it Desktop as a service, which you can access over the internet." So it's like your traditional PC, but you won't be able to see physical resources. And you can access it anywhere in the world over internet connection. They will be hosted on Server Provider's primeses.
Let's have a look at the history first, The first computer which was invented back in 1943 and it was named ENIAC. It occupied more than 1800 Sq. ft. just to fit in, and years after that, a small smartphone which can fit into my pocket performs million times better than the computer which consumed 150kW of electricity.
So this simply proves that we are slowly moving away from traditional equipment and we going towards a point where wo won't have to have anything which occupies space, infact we'd prefer something which can fit in our pockets.
This panedemic has proved we don't need big setups to do our work, thousands of companies have completely shifted to cloud and they are running successfully. This concept of working from home is getting popular by each day passing.
So for companies, it's obviously a better solution to move to Cloud Desktops. This makes sense that they don't have to spend money and human resourses on managing on-premises clouds. Whole technical world is moving towards a virtual platform. It might be a problem with personal desktops at the moment, but I'm hopeful, one day we'll have a better solution than to carry physical devices everywhere we go.
So the whole point is, there will be a day when we'll have a complete Cloud Desktop world, But it's not an easy road and it'll take quite a few years. We still have a few challenges in the way of Cloud Desktops that we need to address, Like Fast internet connection, Data Security and Availability.
As far as Fast Internet is concerned, with the development of 5G, it's just a matter of few years that we'll have a 5G world or perhaps we'd have 6G in few more years. So that's not going to be a problem a couple of years later.Security has always been a concern with cloud development. Companies would have to offer better solutions or encryptions to users. Hopefully there'd be better and reliable solutions soon, but when exactly? That's still a question.
I'm looking at an even bigger picture here, thinking it all through, I have a question of my own. With the development of Augmented and Virtual Reality, would we really need Desktop Systems at all? Or there might be a perfect world where we just have to wear a SMART WATCH or SMART GLASSES packed with super computing powers. I'm looking forward to that kind of world. Are You?
