Bearer Network vs Core Network vs aggregation network

Hi there!

In the transmission network, the underlying network directly connected to user equipment (such as routers, switches, and base station equipment) is the access network, which also becomes the last kilometer for user access. The corresponding device is a first-level network device, also called access Network (layer) equipment.


The aggregation network forwards the data received from the access network to the core network, and distributes the data transferred from the core network to the access network. It is the bridge between the access network and the core network. The corresponding device is a second-level network device, also called aggregation (layer) device.


The core network is the core part of the communication network and is mainly responsible for data processing and routing. You can understand it as a "super router", and the corresponding device is a three-level network device, also called a core (layer) device.

For their bandwidth capacity, there is no obvious division, but in each network system, the core network> aggregation network> access network.


OSN refers to Optical Switching Network.

Bearer Network: A network used to carry the messages of a transport-layer protocol between physical devices.

The bearer network is located between the access network and the switch and is used to transmit various voice and data services. Generally, optical fibers are used medium. as the transmission.

Currently, the bearer network integrates multiple transmission technologies such as SDH/MSTP, PTN, IPRAN, and WDM/OTN. The bearer network can be logically divided into four layers: access layer, aggregation layer, the core layer, and backbone layer,

The access layer is the nearest segment of the bearer network. It connects to base stations and other access devices. Through base stations, wireless signals can be transmitted to mobile phones. The access layer is like a path in front of our house. We have to take this path to enter and exit. The path is narrow, so there are few cars to fit in. Similarly, the rate at the access layer is low, usually 155 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s.

The aggregation layer is located above the access layer. It is like a main road in a city. Multiple paths converge into one main road, and more vehicles run on the main road. Therefore, the rate at the aggregation layer is higher than that at the access layer, usually ranging from 622 Mbit/s to 10 Gbit/s.

The core layer is like the main road of a city. The road is wider and carries more goods. The rate at the core layer is 1 Gbit/s to 10 Gbit/s.

The backbone layer is like an inter-provincial highway, including the provincial backbone network and national backbone network. Only inter-province calls need to be transmitted to the backbone layer. If a local call is made, the call does not need to be transmitted to the backbone layer. The rate at the backbone layer ranges from 10 Gbit/s to Tbit/s.
