Hello Community Members,
Today, In this post I will briefly explain about Basics of Distinctive 5G Architecture.
5G Architecture overview:
In terms of architecture, 5G is highly flexible in comparison to previous technologies. Compatibility with different platforms, native softwarization, massive computation & integration with wireless & fixed technologies makes 5G an enabler of new business segments & ventures.

Information being considered as 5th pillar of power, information & Network security in the key concern of this age. User privacy concerns, threats of data misuse & cybercrimes are higher than ever. 5G leads the technological advancements in terms of network & information security due to its self-protection and self-healing functionalities.
Functional Architecture of 5G:
5G architecture consists of two domains: Logical or Function architecture & Physical architecture. A distinctive feature of 5G architecture is, it is not all about the connectivity but also storage & cloud computation. Virtual Network functions (VNFs) are run on virtual machines rather than traditional hardware’s of routers, load balancers & firewalls. Hence, in contrast to legacy systems, 5G is more focused towards VNFs than network entities. Due to more reliance on logical architecture, programmability of 5G architecture helps in tailoring the control & data planes for optimal use of resources & services.

Physical Architecture of 5G:
In terms of physical architecture, flexibility is necessary that is achieved through active & passive elecro-optical technologies of access & metro domains. Passive optical network (PON), Multipoint to Multipoint (MP2MP) & Active remote Node (ARN) are used for optical transport, whereas, access network is to be transformed into a mini-data center that is called Central Office (CO). This will ensure ultra-low latency and localized storage & computation capabilities.
Physical architecture of 5G is normally divided into 5 categories. First is central cloud node that hosts a huge that for storage, processing & networking. A few central nodes are found in a nationwide service provider’s network. Second is regional could node that is attached to metro nodes of urban or sub-urban areas. Third is Edge cloud node that is more close to end user and lied in a CO. Fourth is a cloudlet node that is a mini data center to provide low latency & powerful computing services to mobile & IOT devices. Lastly, Physical network function (PNFs) are actual hardware devices without any virtualization. Identifying of the best mix of VNFs & PNFs is all that ensures success of 5G wireless communication and all the computation benefits it brings with it.
