Today I will share with you the application of optical switch technology in optical fiber network.


Optical switches, through routing selection, wavelength selection, self-healing preservation, and optical cross-connection, are a key device in all-optical switching. The technology of optical switches in the market is solid-state waveguide and mechanical, among which mechanical The optical switch process is relatively simple, and the application is relatively wide. The main reference parameters of the optical switch as a device are switching speed, array size, loss, reliability and scalability.


At the same time, the applications are quite extensive. At present, the main applications include optical cross-connect (OXC), network monitoring with 1×N optical switches, optical fiber communication device testing, optical add/drop multiplexers (OADM):


1. Use optical switches to realize automatic network protection switching. When the optical fiber is broken or the transmission fails, the transmission path of the service can be changed through the optical switch to realize the protection of the service. Usually this kind of protection switching can be realized with only 1×2 port optical switch.


2. Optical cross-connect (OXC). OXC is composed of optical switch array, which mainly realizes dynamic optical path management, fault protection of optical network, and flexible addition of new services. The requirements of optical cross-connect for switches mainly include low insertion loss, low crosstalk, low switching time and non-blocking operation. At present, MEMS technology has entered the experimental stage in optical switching applications. Because it is transparent to wavelength, data rate, and signal format, there is hope to realize switching on the optical layer in the near future.


3. Use 1×N optical switch to realize network monitoring. At the remote optical fiber test point, multiple optical fibers are connected to an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) through a 1×N optical switch, and all optical fibers are monitored through optical switch switching. Or insert a network analyzer to realize online network analysis.


4. Testing of optical fiber communication devices. In the testing process of optical devices, optical cables and subsystem products, optical switches can be used to test multiple devices at the same time, thereby simplifying testing and improving efficiency.


5. Optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM). It is mainly used in ring-shaped metropolitan area networks to realize single wavelength and multiple wavelengths freely up and down from the optical path. The OADM implemented with optical switches can dynamically add and drop arbitrary wavelengths through software control, which will increase the flexibility of network configuration.


Among them, it focuses on the application of realizing automatic protection switching, typically there should be three modes of 1:1, 1+1 and 1-1 protection


The optical line automatic switching protection system (OLP) is an automatic monitoring and protection system independent of the communication transmission system and completely built on the physical link of the optical cable. When the increase in the optical fiber loss of the working line causes the communication quality to decrease or the optical fiber of the working line is blocked, the system can automatically switch the optical communication transmission system from the working optical fiber to the standby optical fiber in real time, realizing the synchronous switching protection of the optical cable line, thereby greatly improving the optical cable The availability of the line enhances the reliability of the communication system and guarantees the quality of service.
