Today, I will elaborate on which switches support which cards.

1   Which switch supports this card?

When you doubt which series of switches supports a card, for the MPU and LPU, the first two digits of the card name can be used for preliminary judgment.

If the card's name starts with "ES", this card is supported by the S7700, for example, ES0D0X12SA00.

If the card's name starts with "EH", this card is supported by the S9700, for example, EH1D2X12SSA0, EH1D2L08QX2E is supported by the S12700.

If the card's name starts with "ET", this card is supported by the S12700, for example, ET1D2X12SSA0. However, some cards starting with "ET" are also supported on the S9700.

In the previous post, we have introduced a very powerful query tool "Hardware Query". The tool supports query of various relationships.

Parts Query

You can manually enter or select a product series. The supported versions and device models are automatically displayed, as shown in the following figure.

You can further query information according to the filtering condition listed below. For example, to query the cards supported by the S12704, click S12704 and Card, and then click Search. The displayed results are the cards supported by S12704.

Click the part number of a card. The detailed information page of the card is displayed. For example, click 03030RPE. The following page is displayed.

You can enter the part number, external model, or silkscreen to query a specific component. For example, to query the ES5D21X04S01, you can enter ES5D21X04S01 in the Keyword text box. The information about the ES5D21X04S01 is displayed, including the device models that support this card.

2   Which cards does this switch support?

Switches support the following types of cards:

l  MPU: is the brain of the switch. It manages and controls the operation and data forwarding of each LPU.

l  SFU: provides high-speed, non-blocking data channels for data switching between service modules.

l  LPU: is used for receiving and sending data

l  Value-added service card: provides specified services such as firewall, AC, and NAT.

2.1   Which LPUs do the switches support?

LPUs are used to receive and send data, so the data switching rate is a primary concern. Besides, the features and specifications supported by the LPUs are also important factors.

As highways are divided into expressways, national roads and provincial roads by rate limits, LPUs are divided into 100GE, 40GE, 10GE, GE and FE interface cards by interface speeds. The following table lists card classifications and product support. (Only LPUs with the most interfaces are listed below.)

LPUs can be divided into five series by function: F series, S series, E series, B series and X series. Their differences lie in features and software specifications:

The S7700 supports S series, E series, F series, B series, and X series.

  • S series LPUs include SA and SC cards, for example, 24-port 100M/1000M Ethernet interface card (SA, SFP).
  • E series LPUs include EA, EC, ED, and EE cards, for example, 48-port 100M Ethernet interface card (EA, SFP).
  • F series LPUs include FA and FC cards, for example, 48-port 1000M Ethernet electrical interface card (FA, RJ45).
  • B series LPUs include BC cards, for example, 48-port 100M/1000M Ethernet interface card (BC, SFP).
  • X series LPUs include X1E, X2E, X2S, X2H, X5E, X5H, X5L, and X5S cards, for example, 48-port 10M/100M/1000M Ethernet electrical interface card (X1E, RJ45).

The S7900 supports the E3E series, E3S series, E3L series, and X3S series cards.

The S9700 supports S series, E series, F series, B series, and X series cards, and POS interface card.

  • S series LPUs include SA and SC cards, for example, 24-port 100M/1000M Ethernet interface card (SA, SFP).
  • E series LPUs include EA, EC, ED, and EE cards, for example, 48-port 100M Ethernet interface card (EA, SFP).
  • F series LPUs include FA and FC cards, for example, 48-port 1000M Ethernet electrical interface card (FA, RJ45).
  • B series LPUs include BC cards, for example, 48-port 100M/1000M Ethernet interface card (BC, SFP).
  • X series LPUs include X1E, X2E, X2S, X2H, X5E, X5H, and X5S cards, for example, 48-port 10M/100M/1000M Ethernet electrical interface card (X1E, RJ45).
  • A POS interface card consists of a WAN card and a P4CF, P4HF, or P1UF subcard.

The S12700 supports S series, E series, and X series.

  • S series LPUs include SA and SC cards, for example, 12-port 10GE Ethernet optical interface card (SA, SFP+).
  • E series LPUs include EA, EC, and EE cards, for example, 48-port 100M/1000M Ethernet optical interface card (EA, SFP).

X series LPUs include X1E, X2E, X2S, X2H, X5E, X5S, and X5H cards, for example, 48-port 10M/100M/1000M Ethernet electrical interface card (X1E, RJ45).

2.2   Which value-added service cards do the switches support?

As highways need traffic police and monitoring, networks need security functions such as firewall, IP Security (IPSec), intrusion detection and antivirus.

As highways need traffic controls and traffic lights, networks require specific service functions such as load balancing, Network Address Translation (NAT) and NetStream.

Below, I list value-added service cards supported by switches.

l  SPU: provides service functions for switches such as load balancing, firewall, NAT, IPSec, and NetStream.

l  OSP: can have an operating system and applications installed to support the applications. IPS can be installed on the OSP now.

l  ACU: provides functions of a wireless access controller (AC). An ACU installed on a switch can be considered an independent AC connected to the switch in bypass mode.

l  NGFW: provides flexible and integrated security functions, such as firewall, NAT, and VPN, for IP networks.

l  IPS: provides flexible and integrated security functions, such as intrusion prevention, antivirus, and DDoS attack defense, for IP networks.
