Hello, everyone!
Today, I will continue to explain aerial optical cable installation.
As I said in the last article, I will continue to explain cables for aerial installation. The main cables are figure 8 and ADSS optical cables.
Figure 8 cables have messenger wire, and we can use messenger wire to fix this cable on the poles. Because it contains a conductor, this cable must be properly grounded. Generally, for PON networks, these types of optical cables are drop optical cables. It is the last segment of ODN (Optical Distribution Network) – from optical access point to home/ONU. The construction of the cable is shown in the following figure.

ADSS or All-Dielectric Self Supporting cables are very popular today. This type of optical cable does not have any metal element, because that, we can use this cable where we want. Optical fibers are in the PVC tubes (or buffer tubes), and all PVC tubes are around the fiberglass rod (strength member). Between PVC tubes and jackets, these are aramid fibers – kevlar. The jacket is usually from polyethylene. We can use these optical cables for spans from 35-40 m to 500 m (about 80 m is a short span, after that, 250 m is a medium span and the long span is 500 m). ADSS cables are connected to the poles using special elements for installation. The construction of the cable is shown in the following figure.

All fiber optic cables must provide protection against water and moisture penetration. Because it would damage the optical fibers. In addition, optical cables for aerial installation must withstand the current max tensile force and constant tensile force, then, atmospheric influences: snow, ice, strong wind, sun - UV light. A jacket of aerial optical cables is made from PE (Polyethylene) with carbon black (it absorbs UV light). Typical aerial optical cables have about 3 kN for constant tensile force.
In the last article, I will explain the process of installation of aerial optical cables on the wooden poles.
I will continue on the next article >> Aerial optical cable installation (4)
Thank you!
