Hello, everyone!

Today, I will continue to explain aerial optical cable installation. This is the second article for this theme.

Before installing the poles, we must check the type and condition of the pole - length, thickness, an inspection of cracks or some damage, etc.

Surveyors have to record the route and mark the places for the poles, as I said in the last article. They have many equipment and tools (camera, GPS device, measure wheel, tape measure, etc). The distance between the poles should be the same. Unless there are some obstacles that do not allow it. In such situations, we must retreat. If there are already poles on that route, our poles must be at least 1 m from those poles.

In order for the poles to be stable, they must be buried deep. This is necessary for the stability of the poles. In the next table, we can see the depth of the pole.

Length of pole

Depth for pole

< 6 m

0.9 m

From 7 to 8 m

1.2 m

> 9 m

1.5 m

Holes in the ground should not be large, because the poles will not have stability. Holes are made by hand or with machines. When there are underground electrical cables or gas pipelines, manual digging is required in these parts. After the poles are placed in the hole, a stone is placed between the ground and the pole. In this way, we have a stable pole.

In special situations (sand, rocky conditions, etc.) only new wooden poles can be cast in concrete.

It is necessary to provide the direction of the route. Therefore, wire or wooden poles are additionally used.

There are a number of cables that can be used for aerial cable installation. These are: ADSS, figure 8, ribbon and OPGW. OPGW is an abbreviation from Optical Power Ground Wire. It is used to transmit electric current and optical signals. The cable is of special construction, on the surface, there is a metal that conducts electricity, and inside there is a metal tube with optical fibers. We use these cables on the overhead power line. The main cables for analysis are ADSS and Figure 8. About this in the next article.
