This post describes the advantages and disadvantages of Abis over IP and over TDM in GSM-R networks. Please have a look below.
Advantages of Abis over IP
1. This feature adapts to the IP trend and supports the evolution of railway radio systems.
2. With high bandwidth and low cost, the IP transmission meets the needs of high-bandwidth data services and enables fast development of new railway services, such as real-time mobile video.
3. The transmission and operation and maintenance (O&M) of service/signaling signals are IP-based, reducing the O&M costs.
4. Compared to the TDM transmission, the IP transmission enables resource reusage using the IP-based packet switching technology, enhancing the resource utilization and reducing the capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating expense (OPEX) of the bearer networks.
5. The wide application of the IP technology makes the IP equipment affordable and the IP bandwidth easily accessible. The implementation of the Abis over IP feature conforms to the trend towards flat network, reducing the network construction cost and facilitating the network maintenance.
Disadvantages of Abis over IP
This feature prolongs the transmission delay.
Advantages of Abis over TDM
1. The transmission delay is short and the transmission is stable in Abis over the TDM mode.
2. The networking and transmission are more reliable. For example, Abis over TDM can support ring topology while Abis over IP only supports star topology.
Disadvantages of Abis over TDM
The required transmission bandwidth is low, the transmission and O&M costs are high.
