Hi there!

I have two questions:

1-What are the advantages of providing an external clock.

2-If I want to provide an external clock to a PTN/OTN or provide the clock of PTN/OTN to any other equipment how can I do it?

Dear friend!
In a large-scale optical transmission network, or some special services have high requirements on the network delay. If the internal clock of the transmission equipment cannot meet the requirements, an external clock source is required to ensure clock synchronization on the entire network.
1. The advantage of an external clock is that it can provide a clock with higher precision that is not generated by the device.
2. After clock signals are transmitted through multiple NEs, frequency deviation and drift may occur. As a result, the clock signals transmitted to the downstream NEs deteriorate. The high temperature precision clock needs to be introduced again.

How to introduce an external clock:

1. Connect the cable carrying clock signals to the clock input port of the device.

2. In the NE Explorer, select an NE and choose Configuration > Clock > Physical Layer Clock > Clock Source Priority from the Function Tree.

3. Click Query to query the existing clock source.

4. Click Create. In the Add Clock Source dialog box, select a new clock source and click OK.

Thank you!

Thank you, dear.. just tell me one more thing. if I want to give PTN an external clock so is there any dedicated port at PTN where I should connect the external clock source? and how many clock sources can be given to a PTN?

Dear friend!
The PTN equipment has specified interfaces for receiving external clocks. Generally, one PTN equipment provides at least two clock input interfaces.

Generally, their clock input interfaces are on the cross-connect board. For example, the XCS board of the PTN 3900 provides a 75-ohm 2 Mbit/s digital signal clock and a 120-ohm 2 MHz analog signal clock. You can select one of the ports to input the external clock.
