Founded in 1991, Phoenix Satellite Television is now an international multimedia group that enjoys a global reputation. With headquarters in Hong Kong, the company provides television, weekly magazine publishing, new media, and broadcast services covering more than 150 countries worldwide.

Key Challenges

The development of digital and network technologies, along with fierce competition, requires media companies to focus on IT system development and technical innovation. Since the deployment of a desktop cloud system in 2009, Phoenix Satellite Television has been a media industry leader in IT system development. The company has built a studio with flying cameras, a tape-free broadcasting system, the top-performing transmission network in Asia, and the latest 360-degree intelligent anchor desk. With the widespread HD video and the mix of cloud computing platforms, the current core LAN switches in the data center of Phoenix Satellite TV couldn't meet the requirements and needed to be upgraded immediately.

More bandwidth and transmission channels are required
HD video and Video on Demand (VoD) services required massive bandwidth resources. Phoenix Satellite Television needed more network transmission channels to meet these service requirements.

Reliability is critical for live news services
To meet the demand for live news services, the company faced high reliability requirements for network devices.

Video on demand required more fluid experience and shorter delay
Growing numbers of users needed VoD services, which required minimal network delay.

Due to the nature of media business, the seamless services handover should be considered while constructing the new network. Huawei provided the X7 series LAN switches, with industry-standard protocols architecture, to enable seamless network upgrading. The solution firstly integrated the new network into the original one, and then gradually rolled out services, preventing services interruption.

The core node performance needs to be seriously considered during the network upgrading. Huawei deployed S9700 series Tbit/s-level, high-end intelligent core LAN switches that target the next-generation campus networks and data center services. These LAN switches used an advanced multi-layer architecture to provide continuous bandwidth upgrading capability and support 40 GE and 100 GE data transmission standards, whose forwarding performance was twice as large as the current LAN switches that were deployed in the data center. Moreover, the cluster bandwidth of S9700 series switches was up to 1280 Gbit/s, ranking first in the industry.

The solution had the following features:

Flattened network layout design for improved reliability
The flattened network architecture decreased forwarding latency to improve service experience. The strategy of Layer-II networking, cluster technology and stack technology created a loop-free network with reliability.

High security and easy business isolation
Phoenix TV has multiple departments and channels, and the isolation and interoperability of different businesses could be realized through meticulous plan of the network.

Hardware probes for easier network maintenance
The unique hardware probe of X7 series LAN switches monitored the real-time network quality, thereby controlling and managing the network more easily.

Customer Benefits

Huawei LAN switches (X7 series) upgraded the data center network of Phoenix TV, which satisfied the needs of high bandwidth for HD video editing and producing. Besides, the advantages of high reliability inside the LAN switches guaranteed the real-time release and live broadcast of the news, and the character of low latency enhanced user experience with VoD services. Phoenix TV will be able to transform more quickly and effectively with the assistance of the newly deployed network platform.
