OSPF area authentication types include simple, message digest 5 (md5), and hash message authentication code (hmac)-md5. OSPF interface authentication types include null, simple, md5, and hmac-md5.

The OSPF authentication principles are as follows:

If authentication is configured on the interface, the authentication mode configured on the interface is adopted.
If the authentication mode configured on the interface is null, the interface is not authenticated.
If no authentication is configured on the interface (the null type does not mean that no authentication is configured), the authentication mode configured on the area is adopted.
If no authentication mode is configured on the area either, no OSPF authentication is performed.
