Q&A: CloudEngine - A Parent Switch Cannot Find Leaf Switches After SVF Is Configured

279 0 0 0

Problem Description

A CE6850EI (parent switch) and CE5810EIs (leaf switches) set up an SVF system. After the configurations are complete, CE5810EIs start with a configuration file, but the parent switch cannot find these leaf switches. Network administrators check the parent switch configuration and find that the configuration is correct.

Root Cause

By default, if a leaf switch starts with no configuration, it performs a negotiation with the parent switch and attempts to join the SVF system in leaf mode. After joining the SVF system, the leaf switch can obtain configuration from the parent switch, and you do not need to perform any configuration on the leaf switch.

If a leaf switch starts with a configuration file, by default, it enters the stack mode (as a common switch) and cannot join the SVF system as a leaf switch.

In this example, CE5810EIs are configured and will start as common switches instead of leaf switches. Therefore, the parent switch cannot find CE5810EIs.

Solution

If a leaf switch starts with a configuration file, use one of the following methods to set its working mode to leaf:
  • Use commands to set the leaf mode after the startup.

Run the stack command in the system view to enter the stack management view and then run the switch mode leaf member all command to set the working mode to leaf mode. The configuration takes effect after the switch restarts.

  • Use the BIOS menu to set the leaf mode during the startup process.

Connect to the switch through the console port and start the switch. Press Ctrl+B to enter the BIOS menu when Press CTRL+B to enter BIOS menu or Press CTRL+B to enter BIOS menu or CTRL+E to boot DFX is displayed. In the BIOS menu, choose 6. Modify stack parameters > 2. Modify stack configuration > 3. Leaf mode > 3. Return > 1. Continue to boot to set the working mode of the switch to leaf mode and then choose to continue the startup process.

  • Use the work mode menu to set the leaf mode during the startup process.

Connect to the switch through the console port and start the switch. Press Ctrl+Y to enter the work mode menu when Press CTRL+Y to modify the switch mode is displayed. In the work mode menu, choose 3. Leaf mode to set the working mode of the switch to leaf mode. The switch then automatically restarts.
