Involved Products and Versions

Modular switch V100R006

Networking

As shown in Figure 1-1, the interface of SwitchA is added to VLAN 4019, and SwitchA and the switch are on different network segments. The version of SwitchA is V100R006, which needs to be upgraded to V200R008.

Figure 1-1 Networking diagram of multicast service exceptions caused by inconsistent PIM neighbor election rules after the switch version V100R006 is upgraded

Fault Symptom

After SwitchA is upgraded, users connected to SwitchA cannot receive multicast services.

Cause Analysis

Before the upgrade, SwitchA is elected as the DR of VLANIF 4091. After the upgrade, the PIM election rules are changed. The peer switch is elected as the DR of VLANIF 4091, and the connected users are also added to VLANIF 4091. Therefore, SwitchA cannot copy traffic to the connected users. As a result, multicast services are abnormal.

Troubleshooting Procedure

                          Step 1     Before the upgrade:

Run the display pim interface command to check PIM information on each interface.

<SwitchA> display pim interface
 VPN-Instance: public net
Interface           State NbrCnt HelloInt   DR-Pri     DR-Address
 Vlanif4091        up   0      30        1        10.255.4.1     (local)
 Vlanif4050          up    1      30         1          172.16.2.2
 Vlanif4080          down  -      30         1          -
 Vlanif4054          up    0      30         1          172.16.16.1     (local)
 Vlanif4055          up    0      30         1          172.16.16.5     (local)
 Vlanif4056          up    0      30         1          172.16.16.9     (local)
 Vlanif4057          up    0      30         1          172.16.16.13    (local)
 Vlanif4090          up    0      30         1          10.169.0.1      (local)
 Vlanif4040          up    0      30         1          172.16.16.153   (local)
 Vlanif4085          down  -      30         1          -
 Vlanif4021          up    1      30         1          10.10.2.42
 Vlanif4058          up    0      30         1          172.16.16.17    (local)
 Vlanif4029          up    0      30         1          10.255.218.193  (local)
 Vlanif4041          up    0      30         1          172.16.16.157   (local)
 Vlanif4042          up    0      30         1          172.16.16.161   (local)
 Vlanif4033          up    0      30         1          10.10.2.45      (local)

Run the display pim neighbor command to check PIM neighbor information.

<SwitchA> display pim neighbor
 VPN-Instance: public net
Total Number of Neighbors = 2

Neighbor        Interface           Uptime   Expires  Dr-Priority  BFD-Session
 172.16.2.2      Vlanif4050          26w:3d   00:01:18 1            N
 10.10.2.42      Vlanif4021          7w:2d    00:01:43 1            N

After the upgrade:

Run the display pim interface command to check PIM information on each interface.

<SwitchA> display pim interface
 VPN-Instance: public net
Interface           State NbrCnt HelloInt   DR-Pri     DR-Address
 Vlanif4021          up    1      30         1          10.10.2.42
 Vlanif4029          up    0      30         1          10.255.218.193  (local)
 Vlanif4033          up    0      30         1          10.10.2.45      (local)
 Vlanif4040          up    0      30         1          172.16.16.153   (local)
 Vlanif4041          up    0      30         1          172.16.16.157   (local)
 Vlanif4042          up    0      30         1          172.16.16.161   (local)
 Vlanif4050          up    1      30         1          172.16.2.2
 Vlanif4054          up    0      30         1          172.16.16.1     (local)
 Vlanif4055          up    0      30         1          172.16.16.5     (local)
 Vlanif4056          up    0      30         1          172.16.16.9     (local)
 Vlanif4057          up    0      30         1          172.16.16.13    (local)
 Vlanif4058          up    0      30         1          172.16.16.17    (local)
 Vlanif4080          down  -      30         1          -
 Vlanif4085          down  -      30         1          -
 Vlanif4090          up    0      30         1          10.169.0.1      (local)
 Vlanif4091        up   1     30        1         192.168.17.1

Run the display pim neighbor command to check PIM neighbor information.

<SwitchA> display pim neighbor
 VPN-Instance: public net
Total Number of Neighbors = 3

Neighbor        Interface           Uptime   Expires  Dr-Priority  BFD-Session
 10.10.2.42      Vlanif4021          01:37:54 00:01:21 1            N
 172.16.2.2      Vlanif4050          01:37:50 00:01:24 1            N
 192.168.17.1  Vlanif4091        01:37:27 00:01:44 10        N

As shown in the preceding command output, a PIM neighbor with the IP address 192.168.17.1 is added on SwitchA and SwitchA is elected as the DR after the upgrade. However, the DR before the upgrade is the switch. Therefore, SwitchA cannot copy traffic to the connected users.

Step 2     Shut down the interface GE1/0/1 of SwitchA so that it is deleted from VLAN 4091 and does not set up a PIM neighbor relationship with the peer switch. The multicast services recover.
