Are you still confused about the password for logging in to a switch? I'm coming to offer answers to the following frequently asked questions:

What is the default password of a switch?

What should I do if I forget the password?

Today I will introduce how to cope with passwords. Everyone can become a password expert.

Knowledge point 1: In what modes can users log in to a switch?

Users can log in to a switch using common modes such as the console port, Telnet, and Web system.

Knowledge point 2: How is a PC connected to the console port on a switch?

Knowledge point 3: How are login users authenticated?

?  AAA mode: Login users are authenticated based on the user name and password.

?  Password mode: Login users are authenticated based on the password.

?  None: Authentication is not performed.

Question 1: What is the default password of a switch?

When logging in to a switch, pay attention to the version and login mode of the switch. The password may be different depending on the version and login mode. By default, no Telnet user is configured on the switch. When users log in to the switch using Telnet, Telnet users should be configured. When users log in to the switch using the console port, no default password is configured.

Question 2: What should I do if I forget the password?

?  If you have not changed the default password of the switch, find the default password in the preceding table.

?  If you have changed the default password of the switch or no default password is configured on the switch, you can restore the password in different methods based on the login mode.

The operation interfaces of switches may be different.

1.       Restoring the Password for Login Through the Console Port

Method 1: Log in to the switch using Telnet and change the password for login through the console port.

If you have a Telnet account and user rights of an administrator, log in to the switch using Telnet, change the password for login through the console port, and save the configuration.

Step 1: Log in to the switch using a Telnet account.

Step 2: Change the password for login through the console port.

For example, the password authentication is configured and the password is Huawei@123.

<HUAWEI> system-view

[HUAWEI] user-interface console 0

[HUAWEI-ui-console0] authentication-mode password

[HUAWEI-ui-console0] set authentication password cipher huawei@123

[HUAWEI-ui-console0] return

Step 3: Run the save command to save the configuration and prevent configuration loss after the restart.

Method 2: Clear the password on the console port using BootROM and then set the password for login through the console port.

Note: If the switch has two MPUs, remove the standby MPU before restarting the switch. After performing the following operations, install the standby MPU and run the save command to ensure that the configurations on the active and standby MPUs are the same.

You can use the switch's BootROM menu to clear the password for console port login and skip password check when logging in to the switch using the console port. After the switch starts, you can change the password for console port login and save the configuration.

Step 1: Connect a host to the switch through a serial cable and restart the switch. When the message "Press Ctrl+B to enter Boot Menu..." is displayed, press Ctrl+B and enter the password (default password: Admin@huawei.com). The BootROM main menu is displayed.

Step 2: Choose Clear password for console user under the BootROM main menu to clear the password for login through the console port.

Step 3: Choose Boot with default mode under the BootROM main menu to restart the switch.

Note: Do not choose Reboot; otherwise, the password fails to be cleared.

Step 4: After the switch starts, you can log in to the switch through the console port without entering the password only this time. After logging in to the switch, configure a new console port login password immediately. This following uses password authentication configuration as an example and the password is set to huawei@123.

<HUAWEI> system-view

[HUAWEI] user-interface console 0

[HUAWEI-ui-console0] authentication-mode password

[HUAWEI-ui-console0] set authentication password cipher huawei@123

[HUAWEI-ui-console0] return

Step 5: Run the save command to save the configuration and prevent configuration loss after the restart.

2.       Restoring the Telnet Login Password

If you forget the Telnet login password, log in to the switch in other ways (for example, through the console port) and change the Telnet login password.

Step 1: Log in to the switch in other ways (for example, through the console port).

Step 2: Change the user password.

For example, configure AAA authentication in VTY user interfaces 0 to 4 and set the password of user huawei to huawei@123.

<HUAWEI> system-view

[HUAWEI] user-interface vty 0 4

[HUAWEI-ui-vty0-4] authentication-mode aaa

[HUAWEI-ui-vty0-4] quit

[HUAWEI] aaa

[HUAWEI-aaa] local-user huawei password irreversible-cipher huawei@123

[HUAWEI-aaa] local-user huawei service-type telnet

[HUAWEI-aaa] local-user huawei privilege level 3

3.       Restoring the Password for Login Through the Web System

If you forget the password for login through the Web system, log in to the switch in other ways (for example, through the console port) and change the password for login through the Web system.

Step 1: Log in to the switch in other ways (for example, through the console port).

Step 2: Change the user password.

For example, set the password of user huawei to huawei@123.

<HUAWEI> system-view

[HUAWEI] aaa

[HUAWEI-aaa] local-user huawei password irreversible-cipher huawei@123

[HUAWEI-aaa] local-user huawei service-type http

[HUAWEI-aaa] local-user huawei privilege level 3

4.       Restoring the BootROM Login Password

If you forget the password for login through the BootROM menu, log in to the switch in other ways (for example, through the console port) and change the password for login through the BootROM menu.

Step 1: Log in to the switch through the console port.

Step 2: Run the reset boot password command in any view to restore the default password Admin@huawei.com for login through the BootROM menu.

Step 3: Run the reboot command in the user view to restart the switch.

Step 4: When the message "Press Ctrl+B to enter Boot Menu..." is displayed during the restart, press Ctrl+B and enter the default password. The BootROM main menu is displayed.

Step 5: Choose Modify bootrom password under the BootROM main menu to change the password as prompted.

If you forget the console port login password and BootROM password, perform the following operations:

a. If you have not changed the BootROM password, find the default BootROM password in the preceding table in the first post based on the switch model.

b. If you have accounts for other login modes, log in to the switch using one of the login modes, and reconfigure the console port login password and BootROM password. For details, see the following parts in the first post:

1. Restoring the Password for Login Through the Console Port

4. Restoring the BootROM Login Password

c. If you cannot perform the preceding operations, you may fail to log in to the switch.

Tks a lot.

In truth , I received EQUIPMENT 's own Huawei , for testing. and set passwords are not the standards. Then my alternative is the "C" . In this case I lost the equipment , I can not use it?

this would not be a failure of Huawei ?

Huawei: could you provide your password to us, which was set in the nonstandard format ? This will help us to reproduce the issue.

2. In this case I lost the equipment , I can not use it?

Huawei: What do you mean by saying "I lost the equipment" ? You could not connect the device or could not login the device sucessfully?

If possible, could you connect the switch again, login and make a screenshot or copy the log/echo to us?

Appreciate for your time.

ME: They ( HUAWEI Brazil ) did not send any password for me . According to them, the "switch" Passed For the hand of other partners . Probably these " partners " have changed the password bootmenu and console.
Note : I have not contact these partners.

Hi , bro , your English is good :)

If you forget all password (telnet, console, and bootrom password), I am afraid you have to return it to factory.
