Does it mandatory to configure the device IPs in 3900 Series Base Station?

If Yes / Could we just configure Eth IP or Eth trunk?
If No / What are the benefits of configuring the device IPs comparing with Eth IPs?
Could I consider the Eth IP as “physical IP” and device IP as “logical IP”?
