Hello, everyone!
Today, I will start to write about new PON technology. It is 25G-PON. And that's not the end. The implementation of 50G-PON is expected in 8 to 10 years, which is already being tested in the laboratories of PON development leaders (Huawei, Nokia and Calix). In the future, we expect 100G-PON technology, the testing of which is already announced. The main role of the new PON generations is a powerful optical network that enables the connection of consumers, companies, cities and the mobile network.

PON technologies GPON, XG-PON and XGS-PON are current. Leading companies in the development and production of PON technology have already prepared 25G-PON equipment for commercial use. 25G-PON technology already has commercial use, but it is still very small – some big telecommunication operators in UK, Denmark, Belgium, etc. It is believed that by 2022, the implementation of 25G-PON will accelerate. Still with large telecommunications operators.
The main question is what the new 25G-PON technology brings us.
The current generation of PON - GPON, XG-PON, XGS-PON are mainly intended for residential users and companies. The implementation of 25G-PON technology will enable:
transport of 5G mobile traffic - from the location of 5G cells deeper in the network,
companies will be able to use services symmetrically > 10 Gbps,
connecting companies, consumers and cities,
new services that are developing will have an access network that will allow smooth operation (like massive scale virtual reality, real-time digital twins, remote surgery, etc. ), etc.
Who are the main drivers of the new PON standards?
XGS-PON cannot provide large companies with a constant 10/10 Gbps, it is usually around 8 or 9 Gbps. With the 25G-PON standard, 20 Gbps will be enabled. The next big driver of the new standard is 5G technology. 5G technology requires much more cells than older 3G or 4G. These cells require connectivity enabled by a 25G-PON network. In this way, mobile networks are provided with adequate optical connections with low latency and sufficient capacities. In addition, FTTH networks have been built, especially in urban areas, thus reducing the demands of mobile operators to build their transport networks.
This is the end of this article. I will continue to write about this topic in the next article >> 25G-PON (2)
Thank you!
