Today I would like to share with you 10G-PON easily coexists with GPON through WDM stacking.


Physically, 10GPON can be understood as "post-GPON". The most basic requirement of the system in the 10GPON era is to provide a higher data transmission rate than GPON. Therefore, the standard specifications of 10GPON are 10G downstream, 2.5G upstream, and the average upstream/downstream bandwidth is 4 times and 2 times higher than that of GPON. In addition, compared to GPON, 10GPON also has a significant improvement in physical specifications such as branch ratio, optical power budget, and transmission distance. As shown in the figure below:

The current GPON system is used to migrate to NG-PON, in the same optical distribution network, which means coexistence. The advantage is that it saves costs and is easier to plan, maintain and expand this network. The evolutionary growth in NG-PON is based on the need for minimal equipment investment. NG-PON should have the same infrastructure as the operation of GPON. However, coexistence should be supported by certain precautions to avoid interference between downstream and GPON and NG-PON upstream channels. Therefore, the current coexistence of GPON and NG-PON requires the arrangement of ONT GPON signal wavelength separation, 10 Gigabit PON (called: XG-PON) and WDM-PON. Low-cost WDM band separation can ensure that GPON ONT can operate in the original state required for NG-PON deployment.


Therefore, considering the full protection of the optical fiber systems deployed by operators, the ODN of 10GPON must completely follow the GPON network topology and reuse the optical fibers and splitters that have been put in the existing GPON network: first, ensure the coexistence with GPON In order to complete the smooth evolution from GPON to 10GPON, further increase the interface board supporting 10G on the OLT side and replace the ONT/ONU.


In order to achieve coexistence with GPON on the same ODN, 10GPON adopts a different upstream/downstream wavelength plan from GPON, thereby adopting a wavelength division stacking method (by placing WDM1r devices at the central office, combined with terminal front or embedded WBF devices , Multiplexing/demultiplexing multiple working signals in the upstream/downstream direction) to achieve compatibility between 10GPON and GPON.


On the basis of coexistence, 10GPON further provides the realization of smooth evolution: When upgrading, operators can choose to upgrade only part of the user equipment on the ODN or replace all user equipment with next-generation equipment at one time. The difference between the two upgrade methods is the length of time that GPON and 10GPON systems coexist. In order to realize the upgrade from GPON to 10GPON, all ONUs and OLTs must strictly follow the wavelength plan specified by ITU-T G.984.5amd1 (extended band).


The downlink signal band of XG-PON1 is 1575~1580nm (1575~1581nm for outdoor applications), and the uplink signal band is 1260~1280nm. Due to the inevitable coexistence requirements in the evolution of the entire network, XG-PON1 ONU needs to reserve enough bandwidth for existing GPON and CATV signals, and the impact of crosstalk between different signals should be minimized.
