Hi all,

Good afternoon! Question about switch s5735-s24t4x. Our 10G single board can be inserted into GE optical module and work in GE mode. it has sfp+ 10ge ports, can these ports are connected to switches with a regular SFP 1GE.

Thanks!

Hello friend,

No.

The reasons are as follows:

On the one hand, for GE light, the encoding method is 8b10b; while for 10GE light, the encoding method is 64b66b; the difference in physical encoding methods makes the signal unable to be locked at the physical layer (PHY), so the physical layer cannot be UP.

On the other hand, the auto-negotiation of the GE optical port cannot negotiate the rate, and the 10GE optical port has no auto-negotiation at all, so the two sides cannot be expected to automatically negotiate the rate.

It may be easy to confuse the two concepts in many cases: rate level vs working rate

The 10G optical port we usually say corresponds to its maximum rate level. In fact, it can also work at a 1G rate (whether 10G supports working at a 1G rate is related to the board, please check the manual for confirmation).

It seems that the 10G optical port is connected to the 1G optical port, but if the 10G optical port is actually working at 1G at this time, it can still be connected.

Hope to help you!
