3G authentication and encryption helps to improve the network security from the following aspects:
Network authentication on the subscriber: Prevents illegitimate subscribers (for example, subscribers using SIMs with a cloned IMSI and KI) from using network services.
Subscriber authentication on the network and integrity protection: Protects subscribers against attacks from illegitimate networks.
Whether to perform authentication is determined by the carrier. To protect investment of carriers, authentication is usually performed in each call setup, location update, supplementation service activation without call connection, or SMS exchange
