The UMG8900 must be integrated with a (G)MSC Server to implement (G)MSC functions of a mobile core network. With the bearer independent call control (BICC) structure, the UMG8900 supports flexible networking modes and can interconnect with existing networks.

The UMG8900 supports the following networking applications:

Serving as the (G)MSC with a (G)MSC Server in a GSM core network
Serving as the bearer equipment and networking with a (G)MSC Server in a UMTS R99 network.
Serving as the bearer device in a UMTS R4 network.
Serving as an IM-MGW to cooperate with the media gateway control function (MGCF) in an IMS network.
