The voice quality monitor collects information about factors such as packet loss, jitter, and delay for each session on the voice over IP (VoIP) network through Real-time Transport Protocol/Real-time Transport Control Protocol (RTP/RTCP) packets exchanged between UMG8900s, and calculates the mean opinion score (MOS) for each session by using the

E-MODEL algorithm defined in the ITU-T G.107 protocol. The UMG8900 periodically outputs the weighted average MOS value for each session between an IP address pair. Thus, the carrier can know the change of the MOS value of each IP address pair and the number of users in each MOS value range. In addition, different UMG8900s on the VoIP network can

exchange local voice quality information through RTCP XR (RFC3611) packets (the bandwidth of the RTCP XR packet is very small so that it can be neglected in calculation). Thus, the carrier can learn the voice quality of the entire network from a single UMG8900.This facilitates voice quality fault location on the network.

With the voice quality monitor feature, carriers can know the impacts of factors such as packet loss, jitter, delay, and transcoding on the VoIP network. This facilitates network planning and management, and helps carriers provide voice services with higher quality. In addition, carriers can locate voice quality faults on the network with this feature.

Only the VPDs on the hardware platforms of UMG8900 V200R005 and UMG8900 V200R007 support this feature. The TCB on the hardware platform of the UMG8900 R003 does not support this feature.

This feature is applicable to the VMSC, GMSC, and TMSC
