This feature is introduced in UMG8900 V200R005.

The UMG8900 supports the Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) protocol. By periodically sending the UDP-based data packets to detect faults, BFD can detect and determine the physical disconnection of the transmission links, optical interfaces, and electrical interfaces. In addition, BFD can detect and determine the failure of the link layer

and network layer, such as packet loss, bit error, and forwarding failure. BFD makes up for the defect of detecting the failure of only the physical layer.

Benefits: This feature provides a more reliable mechanism to detect equipment failures. The reliability of the IP bearer network is improved through the cooperation with IP bearer network equipment such as routers.

Description: The UMG8900 supports the BFD protocol. In addition, BFD can detect and determine the failure of the link layer and network layer, such as packet loss, bit error, and forwarding failure. BFD makes up for the defect of detecting the failure of only the physical layer. The BFD mechanism enables fault detection and determination to be complete in 30 ms. The BFD function is essential for new generation routers. With other failure protection mechanisms, the BFD function lays a good foundation for highly reliable IP

networks.

For example, if the traditional VRRP protocol is applied between the MGW and the PE, the default fault detection time is one second, and the detection period is relatively long. If the enhanced VRRP protocol is applied and BFD whose default detection time is 10 ms is adopted for link fault detection, the fault detection period can be shortened greatly.

Dependency: This feature requires the cooperation of routers.

This feature is applicable to the VMSC, GMSC, and TMSC.

Can we use this feature for equipment also like PS & Transmission equipment?

Great function of this feature.

So, this is also a router feature where it needs to enable.
