Summary: The UMG8900, serving as an agent, provides the Iu-Flex function (MSC pool solution). Processing on the large number of deployed RNCs is an important part in evolution to MSC pool networking. In this case, RNCs on the existing networks must be upgraded to be capable of the Iu-Flex function. To solve this problem, the UMG8900 provides the Iu-Flex function. Then, RNCs on the existing networks can connect to the MSC pool without being upgraded.

Benefits: In the deployment of the MSC pool networking, the UMG8900, serving as an agent, provides the Iu-Flex function, which can connect the RNC to the MSC pool without upgrading the RNC software and hardware of the existing network. The restructuring of the MSC pool is easy to implement, thus saving the TCO.

In the deployment of the MSC pool network, the UMG8900, serving as an agent, provides the Iu-Flex function, which can reduce the number of the Iu-Flex function NEs and the OPEX.

Description: The UMG8900, serving as an agent, provides the Iu-Flex function (MSC pool solution). Iu-Flex, defined in 3GPP TS 23.236, is a technology for fault tolerance, resource sharing, and load sharing in CNs. As stipulated, the functional entity of Iu-Flex is the RNC. The Iu-Flex function provides an appropriate solution to fault tolerance and helps to realize resource sharing and load sharing in the CN. Therefore, carriers who intend to build large mobile communications networks may take the MSC pool networking mode by preference. This  mode may also be employed in the existing large wireless communications networks.

Processing on the large number of deployed RNCs is an important part in evolution to MSC pool networking. The RNCs on the existing networks must be upgraded for supporting the Iu-Flex function. Upgrading the RNCs on the existing networks for supporting the Iu-Flex function is difficult because of the following reasons:

A large number of RNCs that do not support the Iu-Flex function exist.

The upgrade planning for RNCs of different vendors varies. To solve this problem, the UMG8900 provides the Iu-Flex function. Then, RNCs on the existing networks can connect to the MSC pool without being upgraded.

Dependency

This feature requires the cooperation of the MSC server.

This feature requires the cooperation of the Virtual MGW feature.

This feature is applicable to the VMSC.

A large number of RNCs that do not support the Iu-Flex function exist. Then we found the below solution form Iu flex function:

What is TCO? Is it transcoder?
