Continuous Packet Connectivity [CPC]

Discontinuous transmission (DTX)

to reduce the uplink interference and thereby increase the uplink capacity, as well as to save battery power.

Discontinuous reception (DRX)

to allow the UE to periodically switch off the receiver circuitry and save battery power.

HS-SCCH-less operation

to reduce the control signaling overhead for small amounts of data, as will be the case for services such as VoIP.
