Description The Usage-based Dynamic Policy Control feature is applicable to the following scenarios: -
Limit the total data volume for a certain type of service in a specified period. For example, you can limit the data volume for a peer-to-peer (P2P) service to 50 MB per week and limit the duration for a voice over IP (VoIP) service to 300 minutes per month. -
Limit the total volume for a subscriber in a specified period. To promote a new service and attract more subscribers, carriers usually charge subscribers on a monthly basis without restricting the data volume. This marketing strategy, however, leads to network congestion, causing 20% of the subscribers to occupy about 80% of the network traffic. As a result, the communication requirements of most subscribers cannot be satisfied. In addition, this hinders the rollout of new services. The fair usage policy (FUP) service allows carriers to provide a usage-limited service package that is charged on a monthly basis for subscribers. By using this feature, carriers can limit the volume usage of a subscriber in a specified period. When the volume usage of the subscriber exceeds the specified threshold, PCRF lowers the access rate of the subscriber. This ensures that subscribers using the same service can have the same experience. |
