Is there any provision to measure dispersion in fiber link from U2000?

If it possible then which version of U2000 is applicable for it?

Hi friends expecting your answer.

Its possible indirectly measure dispersion by using transponders board. If you have 40G board you can see which chromatic dispersion was compensated by internal DCM module of this board. If you have coherent board, in performance you can found not only chromatic dispersion, but PMD also. Actually not PMD, but DGD value, in performance name will be PMD, but actually its  DGD. If you need understand a difference between PMD and DGD, you can read my article about PMD.

So, if you need have a look on dispersion on some fiber, you can use 40G or coherent board.

I think right now is not possible to measure any kind of dispersion (chromatic or PMD) through U2000 because this kind of parameters are inherent to the fiber physical properties. To measure this kind of parameter it?s necessary complex and expensive measurment instruments. It?s not possible to do it by software only.

As far as I know, OSN WDM family have some boards to mesure the optical spectrum (this boards are optical spectrum analizers) and they are very useful to monitor the optical channel quality and maintain the spectrum equalized.

These are the boards supported by OSN8800 for example:

  • MCA4
    MCA4: 4-channel spectrum analyzer unit
  • MCA8
    MCA8: 8-channel spectrum analyzer unit
  • OPM8
OPM8: 8-channel optical power monitor board
  • WMU
    WMU: wavelength monitored unit
You can check their features in hedex. This boards can be query by U2000 and gives you a good measurment of the OSNR, optical power and so on, of your devices in the network. I had work particulary with MCA8 and it?s very useful! it?s highly recommended to have one of these boards!

Thanks sevillaf for sharing your information. Yes we have MCA4 & MCA8 in our DWDM Network. We already use them for OSNR , optical power measurement. But it would be better if there any board that can measure Dispersion. Since our fiber network is getting older day by day, dispersion is now becoming a common factor.
