VRRP specifies a dynamic election protocol. This protocol selects a Master router from a group of VRRP routers and the master router is associated with a Virtual Router as the default gateway of the connected network segment.VRRP is needed because the single gateway cannot provide any redundancy, lacking of availability. The result of running VRRP is to provide a virtual router in the LAN. Virtual router is identified by the VRID and the Virtual IP address associated.The election of Master is based on the Priority of Virtual Router.

Yes good post we widely deploy VRRP in our IP/MPLS network at RSG side to get redundancy if a link fails. Specially used to connect a router to a RNC or LTE core equipment. It?s a very useful protocol and very easy to deploy.

Only one thing to remember when you are going to deploy a VRRP, don?t forget to configure a L2 link between both routers to send the VLAN to synchronize the master/backup routers running VRRP.
