Mobile station power consumption a serious problem for Telcos
|
In UMTS, MS power consumption is a serious problem for wireless data transmission. The data bandwidth is significantly limited by the battery capacity. Therefore, power saving mechanisms are typically exercised to reduce power consumption. Most existing wireless mobile networks (including UMTS) employ Discontinuous Reception (DRX) to conserve the power of MSs. DRX allows an idle MS to power off the radio receiver for a predefined period (called the DRX cycle TD) instead of continuously listening to the radio channel.
