In my experience attenuation is very dominating problem in DWDM transmisson domain
To solve this issues most of the cases I faced following problem:

• Poor fiber splices
• Physical gaps between fibers that is loose connector
• Fiber bend
• Laser strength of OTU decrease
• Degraded fiber patch chord
