The MSC is the softswitch center in a WCDMA network. It incorporates the VLR database. Its functions include:

• Call control

• Access control of MGW

• Resource allocation

• Signaling processing

• Routing

• Authorization

• Charging

The MSC is used to provide basic services, mobility management, and multimedia services for subscribers.

Mobility Mangement: The temporary data of mobile subscriber will be recorded in the MSC/VLR. Meanwhile, the VLR number where the subscriber is located currently will be recorded in HLR. When the subscriber powers on/off, or the subscriber roams from one location area to another location area, perform location update. To ensure the accuracy of location information in the network, MS should originate periodic location update.

HLR & MSC authorization:

HLR contains the permanent info of the subscriber whereas MSC /VLR contains the current location update.

Signaling processing: It means signal is processed through other medium like interface or protocol.

MSC allocate Resource for MGW: MSC should know how many subs/Erl will be shared to MGW, then he ararnge thats type of protocol, link etc. and share the resource.

In the packet network the SGSN is similar to the MSC, almost same functionality from a packet point of view.
