Configuring Transparent Ethernet Service for RTN 905

Felipe Sevillano, Transport & Data Planning Department, TELECOM PERSONAL PARAGUAY

Sometimes we need to deploy a transparent Ethernet service through a MW link, that means that we don?t need to tag any VLAN between two sites. The following are the steps to configure this kind of services using RTN905.

The steps are extracted from: OptiX RTN 905 Product Documentation, Product Version: V100R005C01, Library Version: 04, Date: 08/30/2013.

Setting ETH port.

Table 1 Procedure for configuring Ethernet ports

Operation

Description

Setting the Basic Attributes of Ethernet Ports

Configure the parameters as below:

  • Set up ports to be used in Enabled.
  • Set up Port Mode to Layer 2 and Encapsulation Type to Null.
  • Set up negotiation n and dúplex mode of the ports according to the case. Generally is 100Mbps Full Duplex
  • Set up Max Frame Length (byte) according to your necessities. By default this value is Max Frame Length (byte) 1536.

Setting the Basic Attributes of IF_ETH Ports

Set up Port Mode a Layer 2 y Encapsulation Type to Null.

NOTE:

a: For a radio link for which 1+1 protection or LAG is configured, set parameters for only the main port. The following operations described in this section are also applicable to the main port only.

Setting the Basic Attributes of Ethernet Ports

Procedure

  1. Select the NE and go to NE Explorer. Chose Configuration > Interface Management > Ethernet Interface.
  2. Click in Basic Attributes.
  3. Set up parameters of ethernet ports according to the table 1.

NOTE:

    • Port Mode specifies the mode of the Ethernet port.
    • If Port Mode is Layer 2, Encapsulation Type can be set to Null, 802.1Q, or QinQ.
    • If Port Mode is Layer 3, Encapsulation Type can be set to 802.1Q only and the port can carry MPLS tunnels.
    • If Port Mode is Layer Mix, Encapsulation Type can be set to 802.1Q only and the port can carry both native Ethernet services and MPLS tunnels.
    • Encapsulation Type specifies the method of the port to process the received packets.
    • If you set Encapsulation Type to Null, the port transparently transmits the received packets.
    • If you set Encapsulation Type to 802.1Q, the port identifies the packets that comply with the IEEE 802.1q standard.
    • If you set Encapsulation Type to QinQ, the port identifies the packets that comply with the IEEE 802.1ad QinQ standard.
    • The Ethernet ports of different types support different Working Mode.
    • When the equipment on the opposite side works in auto-negotiation mode, set the Working Mode of the equipment on the local side to Auto-Negotiation.
    • When the equipment on the opposite side works in full-duplex mode, set the Working Mode of the equipment on the local side to 10M Full-Duplex, 100M Full-Duplex, or 1000M Full-Duplex depending on the port rate of the equipment on the opposite side.
    • When the equipment on the opposite side works in half-duplex mode, set the Working Mode of the equipment on the local side to 10M Half-Duplex, 100M Half-Duplex, or Auto-Negotiation depending on the port rate of the equipment on the opposite side.
    • GE electrical ports support 10M full-duplex, 10M half-duplex, 100M full-duplex, 100M half-duplex, 1000M full-duplex, and auto-negotiation.
    • GE optical ports support 1000M full-duplex and auto-negotiation.
    • The value of Max Frame Length(byte) should be greater than the length of any frame to be transported.
    • Auto-Negotiation Ability specifies the auto-negotiation capability of the Ethernet port.
    • For GE optical ports, Auto-Negotiation Ability can be set to 1000M Full-Duplex only.
    • Auto-Negotiation Ability is valid only when Working Mode is set to Auto-Negotiation.
    • The SFP on the EG6 board supports the optical port and electrical port.

4.      Click Apply. Close the displayed dialog box.

Setting the Basic Attributes of IF_ETH Ports

Procedure

  1. Select the NE  and go to NE Explorer. Chose Configuration > Interface Management > Microwave Interface.
  2. Click in Basic Attributes.
  3. Set up parameters of IF_ETH port according to table 1.

NOTE:

    • If Port Mode is Layer 2, Encapsulation Type can be set to Null, 802.1Q, or QinQ.
    • If Port Mode is Layer 3, Encapsulation Type can be set to 802.1Q only and the port can carry tunnels.
    • If Port Mode is Layer Mix, Encapsulation Type can be set to only 802.1Q or QinQ and the port can carry both tunnels and Native Ethernet services.
    • Encapsulation Type specifies the method of the port to process the received packets.
    • If Encapsulation Type is set to Null, the port transparently transmits the received packets.
    • If Encapsulation Type is set to 802.1Q, the port identifies the packets that comply with the IEEE 802.1Q standard.
    • If Encapsulation Type is set to QinQ, the port identifies the packets that comply with the IEEE 802.1ad QinQ standard.

4.      Click Apply. Close the displayed dialog box.

Setting IEEE 802.1d-Bridge-Based E-LAN

Table 2 Procedure for configuring IEEE 802.1d-bridge-based E-LAN services

Operation

Description

Configuring IEEE 802.1d Bridge-Based E-LAN Services(Web LCT)

Set parameters as below:

  • Set up Tag Type to Tag-Transparent.
  • Set up Self-Learning MAC Address to Enabled
  • In UNI tab, set Port to Null.

Configuring IEEE 802.1d Bridge-Based E-LAN Services(Web LCT)

Procedure

  1. Select the NE and go to NE Explorer. Chose Configuration > Ethernet Service Management > E-LAN Service.
  2. Click in New. The Create E-LAN Service window is displayed.
  3. Click in Configure the source and sink. Set basic attributes of E-LAN.

NOTE:

Set Tag Type to Tag-Transparent.

  1. Configure ports mounted to the bridge on the UNI side.
    1. Click in Get UNI Port. Get UNI Port window is displayed.
    2. Configure ports mounted to the bridge on the UNI side.
      1. Select the port to be mounted to the bridge.

NOTE:

Preset Encapsulation Type of the port to Null.

      1. Click to mount the port to the bridge.

NOTE:

Hold the Ctrl key on the key board to select multiple ports.

  1. Click OK.

---END---

With this procedure you are able to transparent transmit ETH services through one or more MW links using RTN905, the procedure is applicable to other RTN900 series.

Hope can be useful for somebody!

Best Regards!

Felipe.
