Measuring distance between DWDM Equipment

You can calculate approximate distance by OSC channel power. Just calculate difference between output power on transmite interface of OSC channel (SC1/SC2/TC1/TC2) in one station and input optical power in receive station. Than devide calculated attenuation by 0.2 (0.2 dB/km) and you will get approximate distance: L = (OutPower - InputPower)/0.2 For example: SC1 out power is -4dBm SC1 in power on opposite station is -22 dBm L = (-4 - (-22))/0.2 = 18/0.2 = 90 km |

Dear Tina, Without MDS6600, cannot we actually measure the exact distance between two NE of DWDM ? Dear V83174, Could you please assist me by telling that, Should I consider insertion loss, fiber splicing loss etc for calculating exact distance. I think, I cannot measure the exact distance theoretically if I am not wrong. But the more accurate I can, is better for me at this point. Thanks |

All, No one has mentioned using an OTDR on a spare fibre. That will give you fairly exact figures. Del |
