For an Ethernet interface, the next hop address of a static route must be specified. This is because the Ethernet interface is a broadcast interface and is associated with multiple next hop addresses for the same outbound interface. The next hop thus fails to be identified. Therefore, if the broadcast interface (such as an Ethernet interface) or NBMA interface must be specified as the outbound interface of a route, you must specify the next hop address of the route.
