The UMG8900 supports the G .711 codec and the conversionbetween the  A law and μ law . Therefore, The UMG8900 can interwork with the PSTN.

Benefits:

For carrier:

G .711 is the most commonly used speech codec. It supports service domains such as GSM&UMTS, CDMA, and NGN. In addition, because the G .711 standard was formulated long ago (in1972), it canbe used for the IP voice interworking between dif ferent carriers and networks.

For users:

G .711 is a lossless speech codec. V oIP packets converted by the G .711 codec reserve all information in the PCM code stream. If users perform voice interworking using the G .711 codec, they can enjoy the perfectvoice quality as that in the TDM transmission.
