1.Application Description

1)Service Description

An upgrade guide provides guidance for operation and maintenance engineers to upgrade a base station to a target version on the test bed or live network and helps the engineers know precautions about an upgrade. Therefore, the engineers need to obtain the upgrade guide before performing an upgrade to prevent upgrade failures caused by inappropriate operations.

The upgrade guide provides the version requirements before an upgrade, operation guidance on upgrade or rollback, and upgrade specifications and precautions used before and after an upgrade for the 3900 series base stations. Engineers need to perform upgrade operations strictly following instructions in the upgrade guide.

2)Documentation Description

3900&5900 series base stations herein include the DBS3900, DBS5900, BTS3900, BTS5900, BTS3900A, BTS5900A, BTS3900L, BTS5900L, BTS3900AL, BTS3900C, and LampSite.

3900 series base stations in SingleRAN8.0 and later vesions are classified into three types based on the function and deployment mode: separate-MPT multimode base stations, co-MPT base stations (including the eGBTS), and single-mode base stations.

3900 series base stations in versions earlier than SingleRAN8.0 are classified into separate-MPT multimode base stations and single-mode base stations based on the function and deployment mode.

The upgrade guides are distinguished by the target product version and upgrade tool to be used. The following figure provides reference information about how to select a proper upgrade guide for a base station of a version earlier than SRAN11.1.

In SRAN11.1, the LMT-based upgrade guides for single-mode base stations are combined into one LMT-based upgrade guide for all modes. You can obtain the combined upgrade guide by referring to the following figure.

In SRAN12.1, the U2000-based upgrade has been deleted. All base station upgrades on the U2000 client are now performed on the software management espert(SME). You can obtain the combined upgrade guide by referring to the following figure.

  • A GSM single-mode BTS can be upgraded using the U2000 software management expert (SME), U2000 (for SRAN12.1 and earlier versions), BSC local maintenance terminal (LMT), or site maintenance terminal (SMT), and each upgrade mode has a corresponding upgrade guide.
  • A UMTS single-mode NodeB can be upgraded using the U2000 SME, U2000 (for SRAN12.1 and earlier versions), LMT, or Java LMT (for SRAN8.0 and SRAN9.0), and each upgrade mode has a corresponding upgrade guide.
  • An LTE single-mode eNodeB can be upgraded using the U2000 SME, U2000 (for SRAN12.1 and earlier versions), or LMT, and each upgrade mode has a corresponding upgrade guide.
  • A co-MPT base station can be upgraded using the U2000 SME or LMT, and each upgrade mode has a corresponding upgrade guide.
  • A separate-MPT multimode base station can be upgraded by base station (base stations for each network mode are upgraded together) or by network element (NE) (base stations for each network mode are upgraded independently). An upgrade by base station can be performed on the U2000 (for SRAN12.1 and earlier versions),  and an upgrade by NE is performed in the same manner as that for a single-mode base station.

For example,

  • If the U2000 SME is used to upgrade a co-MPT base station, complete the upgrade by following descriptions in BTS3900&BTS5900 V100RXXXCXXSPCXXX Upgrade Guide (U2000 SME-based)(for SRAN12.1 and later versions) or BTS3900 V100RXXXCXXSPCXXX Upgrade Guide (U2000 SME-based)(for versions earlier than SRAN12.1).
  • If the LMT is used to upgrade an eNodeB, complete the upgrade by following descriptions in BTS3900&BTS5900 V100RXXXCXXSPCXXX  Upgrade Guide (LMT-based)(for SRAN12.1 and later versions) or BTS3900 V100RXXXCXXSPCXXX  Upgrade Guide (LMT-based)(for versions earlier than SRAN12.1).
  • If a GU separate-MPT multimode base station is upgraded by NE, and the BSC LMT and LMT are used for the upgrades on the GSM and UMTS sides, respectively, complete the upgrade by following descriptions in BTS3900 V100RXXXCXXSPCXXX (GBTS) Upgrade Guide (BSC-LMT based) and BTS3900&BTS5900 V100RXXXCXXSPCXXX  Upgrade Guide (LMT-based)(for SRAN12.1 and later versions) or BTS3900 V100RXXXCXXSPCXXX  Upgrade Guide (LMT-based)(for versions earlier than SRAN12.1).

The U2000 SME-based upgrade is recommended currently.
