The maintenance and management subsystem (also called background), is composed of the BAM, emergency workstation (EWS), workstation (WS) and interconnection devices. It provides operation and maintenance functions for users and network management systems.

The communication of maintenance and management subsystem includes the following three parts:

  • The BAM and the EWS communicate with the service processing subsystem through two core LAN switches (LAN switch 0 and LAN switch 1). Both the BAM and the EWS are connected to the two core LAN switches through Ethernet cables. When the BAM is working normally, disconnect the FE cables between the EWS and the two core LAN switches .When the communication between the BAM and the host is abnormal, connect the FE cables between the EWS and the two core LAN switches.

  • The BAM and the EWS are connected to external LAN switch through an Ethernet cable respectively. The WS communicates with the BAM in client/sever mode through the TCP/IP. This LAN switch also provides the network management interface for external devices.

  • The EWS periodically backs up the data of BAM. When the BAM fails, the EWS takes the responsibility of the BAM after its two Ethernet cables are connected to the two core LAN switches 0 and 1.
